[edit] Morrowind Mod Guide

[edit] Sources

[edit] Bethesda Patches

[edit] Wyre Mash

Wyre Mash is a better data file manager than the one that comes with Morrowind. To use it you'll need to install Python and wxPython.

I keep a shortcut on my desktop for easy accessibility. You'll have to edit the shortcut and target properties to do this - make sure the target has the full path to Wyre Mash's python file, and the target is set to Wyre Mash's directory.

[edit] Morrowind Graphics Extender

MGE is a great mod that adds DirectX 8 and 9 effects to Morrowind. Download it and follow the instructions. I keep a shortcut to MGEgui.exe on my desktop as well.

[edit] Installing Mods

Most mods include a readme file. Mods can consist of a .esp file, textures, meshes, other files, or any combination of these. Use Wyre Mash to activate the .esp plugins. If a mod is just replacement files (like many of the texture packs) make sure you look at the pack's readme to make sure you are installing the textures correctly.

[edit] Official Mods

Bethesda has a list of official mods here. I use all of them except Entertainer.

[edit] Unofficial Mods

There are tons of unofficial mods for Morrowind. I tend to use ones that do the following:

  • Fix gameplay issues
  • Add items
  • Retexture parts of the game

Since Etherwind has a much better introductory guide to installing mods in Morrowind in the SA Forums thread, I am just going to make this a list of mods I use. He actually mods the game (I wrote a simple house mod once and lost it years ago) and knows a lot more than me when it comes to leveled lists, texture replacement, etc.

[edit] Texture Replacers

Since these often overwrite each other, you want to do them in a certain order. This is what I'm doing for now, in this order.

I am also using these fixes which smooth over the land mesh in Morrowind.

[edit] Smaller Retextures and Meshes

Same as above except smaller scale. Most of these are self explanatory.

These are listed in Etherwind's guide in this order:

And these are other ones I use.

[edit] Gameplay Modifications

Some of these are just nice to have and are my personal choices.

  • Multiple Teleport Mod lets you have multiple Marks to Recall to.
  • Book Rotate lets you rotate books before you set them down, great if you are collecting.
  • Rotations lest you rotate other stuff like weapons and armor. Great for when you're storing stuff at your house.
  • Marksman Enhanced improves marksmanship in the game quite a bit.
  • Passive Healthy Wildlife eliminates pesky Cliff Racers and other animals that just charge at you. Doesn't affect blighted creatures.
  • Skip Tutorial is an easy way to start the game without all the filler.
  • Herbalism Lite lets you pick ingredients from plants without 'opening' them (inserts the ingredient into your inventory automatically)
  • Dialogue Closer of Doom lets you use a key to shut dialogue boxes like you can hit escape to close containers. Requires the Morrowind Script Extender, but if you are using Morrowind Graphics Extender, MWSE is built in.

[edit] Fatigue/Running Mods

One of my biggest gripes with Morrowind is how slow your character is. Another is that your fatigue drops very quickly especially while running. They removed this in Oblivion. Below are a couple of mods that change these things.

[edit] House Mods

It's nice to have a house that you don't have to break into to own.

Buyable Ghorak Manor is probably the most advanced one available.

Waterfall Valley is another nice house mod with less features.

Etherwind's house is cool too.

[edit] Shaders

There's lots of stuff about shaders in the thread. I haven't settled on a good combination yet but here are some links for now.
